Dorchester School District Two Celebrates the Life and Legacy of Joe Pye
Dorchester School District Two (DDTwo) has learned with deep sadness of the passing of beloved, retired Superintendent Joseph R. Pye on the evening of Friday, March 6, 2026.
He will forever be remembered for his passion to help people, his love for teaching, and his zest for life as he traveled the world and enjoyed Gamecock football with family and friends. Mr. Pye embraced life fully and shared that joy generously with those around him.
While our hearts are heavy with the loss of such a remarkable leader, teacher, mentor, and friend, his spirit continues to live on throughout the schools and community he served so faithfully. He will be remembered with great laughter, many tears, and countless stories as we celebrate an incredible life devoted to uplifting others and strengthening public education.
“Mr. Pye was a remarkable leader who always prioritized our students. His unwavering commitment to building relationships and genuinely caring for those he served created a profound impact on our community,” said Dr. Ashley Wimberly, DDTwo Board of Trustees Chair. “While he will be deeply missed, his influence will resonate for generations to come, as he touched countless lives and transformed public education with his dedication. We are forever grateful for his contributions.”
Attending college was both a privilege for Joe and a great sacrifice for his parents. Determined to make them proud, he set out to build a successful career in business finance. But God had other plans for this young man with a servant’s heart. Before long, he discovered that his true calling was teaching children.
At the time of his retirement on June 30, 2022, Joe Pye had devoted an astounding 52 years to public education, including 49 years as a member of the Dorchester School District Two family, and 23 years as Superintendent.
He began his career as a teacher at Alice Birney Elementary School from 1970 to 1973. In 1973, he joined Dorchester School District Two as a science teacher at Rollings Elementary School, where he served until 1976. His leadership journey continued as Assistant Principal at Newington Elementary (1976–1979), Principal of Flowertown Elementary (1979–1991), Assistant Director of Personnel (1991–1994), Director of Personnel (1994–1999), and Deputy Superintendent in 1999 before being named Superintendent later that year. He served as Superintendent until his retirement in 2022.
While serving as Principal of Flowertown Elementary School, the school became the first in Dorchester School District Two to earn statewide recognition as a Palmetto’s Finest School. This achievement reflected his lifelong commitment to excellence and his desire to always give his very best to his students and staff.
During his tenure as Superintendent, Mr. Pye served more than 26,000 students and their families, guiding the district through the challenges of rapid growth while preserving the strong academic tradition that kept Dorchester School District Two among the highest-performing districts in South Carolina. The district completed 28 major building projects, including 11 new schools, 12 school expansions, and numerous facility renovations to serve the district’s growing community.
“Mr. Pye was more than a former Superintendent of DDTwo, he was truly a fixture of this district and a friend to so many who work here,” said Superintendent Chad Daugherty. “He had a genuine love for the students and the people of DDTwo, and he believed in building strong relationships. He took great pride in working alongside the employees of this district, whom he often referred to simply as his friends. His vision, imagination, and dedication helped shape DDTwo into what it is today, and his lasting imprint can be seen across our schools and throughout the community he cared for so deeply. He will be greatly missed.”
Mr. Pye received numerous honors recognizing his leadership and advocacy for public education. In 2012, he was named South Carolina Superintendent of the Year by the South Carolina Association of School Administrators. In 2013, he was inducted into The Citadel School of Education Wall of Fame as a Champion of Education. Charleston Southern University awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Education in 2001.
An avid supporter of parent involvement, Mr. Pye served as the second Vice President of the South Carolina PTA Board of Directors and was named the SC PTA Principal of the Year. The Dorchester School District Two Board of Trustees recognized Mr. Pye’s service to the school system and to the community by naming Joseph R. Pye Elementary School in his honor in 2011.
Mr. Pye also served the broader community through numerous leadership roles, including as a member of Engaging Creative Minds’ Board, the Citadel Zucker Family School of Education Development Advisory Board, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s Executive Leadership Council. Mr. Pye has also served as Chairman of the United Way Educator Committee and as a member of both the Board of Directors of the Greater Summerville/Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Directors for Heritage Trust Savings and Loan.
His love for children and teaching extended beyond the classroom. Mr. Pye faithfully taught Sunday School at Summerville Baptist Church, continuing to mentor and inspire young people in faith and service.
